First there was Cesaria Evora, Then Lura, and now, the Portuguese/Cape Verdean singer/composer/guitarist Sara Tavares. The title of this CD (pronounced bal-on-SAY) refers to the equilibrium necessary for balancing her mixed, Crioulo culture that stretches from Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Blessed with an angelic voice, and a knack for writing accessible compositions that are global, yet ancestral, Tavares is closer to Les Nubians than to Evora, as the title track makes clear. She s more about adapting her homeland s musical conceptions to include Angolan sembe Afrobeats on Poka Terra, with rapper Melo D, reggae, and Cape Verdean coladeira rhythms on Planeta Sukri, co-starring vocalist Boy Ge Mendes. Fadista Ana Moura helps Tavares tell her soulful story on De Nua. With this heartfelt, autobiographical work, Sara Tavares emerges as a new dark and lovely diva for this decade. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Balance - A Beautiful piece of work from Sara Tavares! Her delightful vocalizations, sweet and soft voice is a pleasure to the senses. I do not even speak Portuguese yet it matters not at all, her voice and music are universal in the true spirit of a gifted and loving talent. Thank you to Sara for sharing your beautiful soul with the world.

Heavenly Sounds - This album is something that I have been in search of for years. I listened to Sara for the first time recently and I was captivated by her voice, style, and phrasing of her lyrics. She is refreshing to listen to all day long. She s certainly someone that I ll be looking more from.

Balance review - The CD is not bad. I wouldn t rush out and buy it, though. Although, in retrospect, that s what I did. Well, it s enjoyable, anyways. It seems a bit amateurish, but, hey, I couldn t do better.

Stimulates my juices - Balancê is one of those pieces of music that I respond to immediately. When I play it, I find myself stopping what I m doing, listening closely, and feeling physically introspective - it makes me want to move my body. It also caused me to recollect a tee-shirt I once saw in Providence, RI. The shirt read, For those who understand, music is the only real art form.

A Well Received Purchase - Bought the CD as a Christmas gift and it was much appreciated by the reciever.
